History

The History curriculum at St. Peter’s is carefully sequenced to build knowledge over time and embed learning in pupils’ long-term memory. Beginning in EYFS with family history (“All about me and my family”), it progresses through Key Stage 1 topics such as the Great Fire of London and Florence Nightingale, and into Key Stage 2 with units on Prehistoric Britain, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Roman Britain, the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, and the Maya civilisation. Pupils engage with key historical concepts such as civilisation, invasion, democracy (for example learning that Ancient Greece was the first democracy) and the role of archaeology and historians. They develop chronological understanding – sequencing major events from Columbus’s 1492 voyage to the 1969 Moon landing – and explore the significance of individuals and events. They also compare and contrast different historical periods (for instance comparing Ancient Greece with Ancient Egypt and Prehistoric Britain). Local history (including the story of Sir Robert Peel, who was born in Bury) fosters pupils’ sense of identity and shows how the past has shaped the present. Throughout, progression is carefully structured and knowledge is revisited and deepened each year.
