Design and technology

At St Peter’s Primary School, the Design Technology curriculum is carefully structured across Years 1 to 6 to develop creativity, practical skills, and an understanding of influential designers. Beginning in Year 1, children learn the foundations of food preparation and construction by making sandwiches and simple rafts, developing skills such as cutting, grating, and joining materials. By Year 2, pupils progress to weaving and building wheel and axle mechanisms, linking their work to historic inventors such as John Kay and the Sumerians.

In Year 3, children explore mechanisms through linkages and levers, as well as food technology by making bread. This balance of mechanical and culinary projects continues into Year 4, where pupils design and create puppets and kites, learning stitching and structural reinforcement. Year 5 builds further independence, combining nutrition knowledge through creating balanced meals and introducing electrical systems with the buzz wire game. Finally, in Year 6, the focus turns to more advanced design and construction, with projects such as building bridges and sewing felt phone cases. These activities allow children to combine creativity, problem-solving, and technical precision.

Overall, the curriculum ensures pupils leave primary school with a broad range of practical skills and design knowledge, grounded in real-world applications
